Microneedling and PRP Therapy

As we get older, our skin experiences distress related to sun damage, acne, weight gain or loss and sometimes injury. These circumstances may lead to scars, keloids or lesions on the skin that can have detrimental effects on your appearance. Treatments are available that have been proven to lessen the severity of facial scarring. At BAM Aesthetics we offer microneedling, with or without PRP therapy, as a way to improve the texture of the skin and reduce visible scars.

What is Microneedling?

The microneedle device contains fine needles that work to eliminate scarring, marks and lesions on the face and body. Microneedling treatment is a minimally-invasive outpatient procedure that is usually completed in multiple sessions. The procedure works by using small needles – between 0.5 and 3.0 mm – to penetrate micro areas of the skin and create controlled wounds. The skin responds by filling the wounds with collagen and elastin, which are natural proteins that can effectively strengthen the skin and reduce the appearance of scarring.

There are various types of microneedles available with some that are appropriate for at-home use and others that are strictly made for skin-care professionals. At BAM Aesthetics, we use the Eclipse MicroPen Elite, which works to break up old scar tissue so that new tissue can generate. The needles are automated and we can adjust their puncture depth to your precise needs, creating a more personalized treatment that ensures your skin looks as natural as possible.

The Benefits of Microneedling

Unlike other skin rejuvenation and repair methods, the microneedling system actually uses your body’s own growth factors to smooth the skin. Because your body is producing its own collagen and elastin, no harsh chemicals are present, resulting in fewer side-effects. Many clients prefer microneedling because of its minimal downtime. Although some redness may occur immediately after the procedure, any irritation should subside by the following day. The procedure is most commonly used on the face, neck and decolatage with appealing results.

Microneedling Can Treat:

Fine lines and wrinkles
Age spots
Stretch marks
Hyperpigmentation
Acne scarring
Rough skin tone and texture

Other treatments, like laser therapy, chemical peels and dermabrasion are effective when treating skin conditions. However, some of these treatments come with higher risk factors that include long-term discomfort and a higher chance of infection. Many clients prefer the chemical-free results that come along with microneedling as well as the relatively pain-free procedure. Additionally, many individuals with darker complexions can receive microneedling treatment without the post-inflammatory issues that are more common when receiving laser procedures.

Microneedling with PRP

One popular method of using microneedling is to combine it with a therapy known as PRP or platelet rich plasma. PRP is found in your blood and is rich in growth factors and other substances that promote healing and cell regeneration. This process has been made popular by celebrities that have coined the term “vampire facial” when PRP is used to rejuvenate the skin. The beneficial substances effectively turn back time on the aging process, using the body’s own processes to restore the skin to a more youthful state.

When PRP is used with microneedling, it allows the growth factors to penetrate deeply into the skin where they can have the most profound effect. The plasma, which is extracted through a normal blood draw and processed in a centrifuge, is applied topically to the skin after the needling process. The plasma is then able to get into the underlying dermal layers where it can stimulate collagen and elastic production as well as healthy cell turnover. PRP can also be injected without micro needling as a natural filler enhancing areas such as under the eyes, fine lines around the lips and more!

PRP therapy is particularly recommended for patients with more advanced signs of aging, as the platelets will work with the microneedling to achieve the desired effect. Over time, you will notice your skin becomes firmer and fine lines and wrinkles diminish as the platelets work with your body to reverse those aging symptoms.

What is the Procedure Like?

A topical cleansing solution will be applied to the skin before the procedure begins. An additional topical anesthetic will be used to keep you comfortable during the procedure. The microneedles are applied over the treatment area, which could take anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. Results are usually not immediately apparent, but you should begin to notice an improvement in your skin as time progresses. Since the generation of elastin and collagen takes time, you will typically have to wait between three and nine months to see the full effects of microneedling. Clients may also have to receive multiple treatments depending on the location of the procedure.

Once your treatment with BAM Aesthetics is complete, it is advised that you continue to use any topical treatments given to you during your procedure. These will ensure that your skin regenerates properly. It is also beneficial for you to adopt a healthy skin-care routine and use protection when exposing yourself to the sun.
